How to Stay Grounded, Protect Your Peace, and Navigate the Holiday Season

The holidays are supposed to be a time of joy, connection, gratitude, and celebration. And while they certainly can be, let's be honest, they can also be incredibly stressful.

Between family gatherings, shopping, cooking, traveling, financial pressures, and trying to meet everyone's expectations, it's easy to find ourselves feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, and disconnected.

And then there are the family dynamics.

You know what I'm talking about. The conversations that trigger you, the expectations that haven't changed in 20 years, or the family member who somehow knows exactly which button to push.

Before you know it, you've gone from feeling peaceful and centered to frustrated, anxious, or completely drained.

But here's something I've learned over the years:

Your energy is your responsibility.

Not because you're responsible for everything happening around you, but because you have more influence over your internal experience than you may realize.

We Can't Control Everyone Else

One of the biggest lessons on the spiritual journey is learning to stop trying to control everything outside of ourselves.

We can't control how other people behave, what they say, what they think, or how they choose to show up.

And yet, so much of our energy is spent trying to do exactly that.

We want people to understand us. We want them to behave differently. We want the holidays to look a certain way. We want everything to go according to plan.

And when it doesn't, we become frustrated.

But what if, instead of trying to change everything around us, we began paying attention to what's happening within us?

What if we stopped giving our peace away every time something didn't go our way?

This is where the real work begins.

Energy Awareness Changes Everything

We are constantly interacting with our environment.

Think about how you feel after spending time with someone who is constantly complaining or criticizing. Now think about how you feel after spending time with someone who is peaceful, loving, and uplifting.

There's a difference.

Our thoughts, emotions, attention, and the environments we spend time in can all influence how we feel.

And most of us move through our days without paying much attention to any of it.

We wake up, check our phones, rush through our responsibilities, react to situations, and carry the stress of one experience into the next.

By the end of the day, we're exhausted, often without understanding why.

Learning to manage your energy begins with awareness.

It's noticing when you've become overwhelmed.

It's recognizing when you're reacting rather than responding.

It's understanding that you don't have to carry every emotion, expectation, or problem that comes your way.

And most importantly, it's learning how to return to yourself.

Five Ways to Manage Your Energy During the Holidays

1. Ground Yourself Before You Begin Your Day

Before reaching for your phone or jumping into your to-do list, take a few minutes to sit quietly.

Place both feet flat on the floor, close your eyes, and take a few slow breaths.

Bring your attention into your body and notice how you're feeling.

You don't need to change anything. Just become present.

Sometimes a few minutes of stillness can completely change how we approach the rest of our day.

2. Pay Attention to What Triggers You

The holidays have a way of bringing old patterns to the surface, especially when we're around family.

Maybe someone makes a comment that brings up an old insecurity. Maybe you find yourself falling back into a role you played as a child.

Instead of immediately reacting, pause.

Ask yourself:

Why is this affecting me so deeply? What is this experience bringing up within me?

Our triggers can become opportunities for greater self-awareness when we're willing to look at them.

3. Stop Taking Responsibility for Everyone's Happiness

This is a big one, especially during the holidays.

You don't have to make everyone happy.

You don't have to attend every gathering, meet every expectation, or say yes to everything.

You can love people and still have boundaries.

You can be kind without abandoning yourself.

And you can enjoy the holidays without exhausting yourself trying to create the perfect experience for everyone else.

4. Be Intentional About Where You Place Your Attention

Our attention is one of the most valuable things we have.

Notice how much time you spend worrying about what hasn't happened, replaying conversations, or anticipating problems.

When you catch yourself doing this, gently bring your attention back to the present moment.

Ask yourself:

Is this where I want to place my energy right now?

Not every thought deserves your attention.

Not every situation requires your reaction.

5. Give Yourself Permission to Slow Down

The holidays don't have to be a race.

You don't have to do everything.

Sometimes the most meaningful moments are the simplest ones. Sitting with someone you love, enjoying a quiet morning, taking a walk outside, or simply being present.

We spend so much of our lives doing that we forget how to just be.

And sometimes, that's exactly what we need.

Managing Your Energy Is a Practice

I want to be clear about something.

Managing your energy doesn't mean you'll never feel frustrated, overwhelmed, sad, or triggered.

We're human. We're here to experience the full range of emotions.

It's not about suppressing what we feel or pretending everything is wonderful.

It's about becoming aware of our internal experience and learning how to move through life without being controlled by every thought, emotion, or circumstance.

And like anything else, this takes practice.

I've personally been studying meditation and energy awareness with my teacher, David Pearce, for the past 15 years.

The techniques I've learned from David have become an important part of my own daily practice.

They've helped me understand the importance of grounding, becoming aware of where I'm placing my attention, and learning to work more consciously with my own energy.

And these are tools I continue to use in my everyday life.

An Invitation: Master Your Energy

I'm excited to share that this November, we're bringing these teachings to our community through a special six-week online course with David Pearce called Master Your Energy

David has spent over 40 years teaching meditation, energy awareness, and intuitive development, and he has a wonderful ability to make these concepts practical and accessible.

Throughout the six weeks, you'll learn techniques for grounding, centering yourself, understanding your aura, running energy, working with mental image pictures, and creating your intentions more consciously.

Whether you're completely new to meditation or looking to deepen your existing practice, this course is an opportunity to develop tools you can continue using long after the holidays are over.

A Final Thought

As we move into the holiday season, I invite you to approach things a little differently this year.

Instead of focusing on making everything perfect, focus on being present.

Instead of trying to manage everyone else's emotions, become more aware of your own.

Instead of giving your energy away to every stressful situation, practice returning to yourself.

Because peace isn't something we have to wait for the world to give us.

It's something we can learn to cultivate within ourselves.

And perhaps that's one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves this holiday season.

With love,

Deanna
