Your Second New Year: An August Wellness Reset
Around Joya: Retreats, Connection, and Transformation
Before we begin this month’s reflection, we’re excited to share a little update from the Joya community.
Our Bali retreat group recently returned from an incredible journey filled with adventure, connection, and meaningful experiences. They explored Bali’s breathtaking landscapes and sacred sites, participated in a purification ceremony at a traditional water temple, wandered through lush rice fields, and experienced the famous swings overlooking the rice paddies.
More than a vacation, this retreat offered everyone an opportunity to step away from the demands of everyday life, reconnect with themselves, experience another culture, and create unforgettable memories together.
Our final retreat of the year will take place this October in Mexico. This special pilgrimage will focus on ancestral healing and the sacred traditions of Día de los Muertos—Day of the Dead. Together, we will explore our connection to those who came before us, honor our lineage, and begin releasing the generational patterns we no longer wish to carry forward.
Experiences like these remind us of the importance of occasionally stepping outside our usual routines to reflect, reconnect, and begin again. But we don’t have to travel across the world to create a meaningful reset. Sometimes, a new beginning can happen right here, in the middle of our everyday lives.
Your Second New Year
January may be known as the time for resolutions and fresh starts, but August offers us another powerful opportunity to pause, reflect, and begin again.
As summer slowly winds down and routines begin to return, August can feel like a natural turning point. Vacations are ending, children are heading back to school, schedules are becoming more structured, and many of us are beginning to look ahead to fall.
Rather than waiting until January to recommit to yourself, consider August your “second New Year”—a chance to reset your habits, reconnect with your intentions, and decide how you want to feel during the remaining months of the year.
Begin With Reflection, Not Judgment
Before setting new goals, take a moment to recognize where you are right now.
Perhaps you started the year feeling motivated and committed to your health, but life became busy and some of those intentions fell away. Maybe summer brought travel, celebrations, disrupted schedules, or less consistency in your movement and self-care.
That doesn’t mean you failed. It simply means you are human.
A reset is not about criticizing yourself for what you haven’t done. It is about meeting yourself with honesty and compassion—and recognizing that every day offers another opportunity to choose again.
Take a moment to ask yourself:
- How do I feel physically, mentally, and emotionally?
- What habits have been supporting me?
- What has been draining my energy?
- What do I need more of during this next season?
- How do I want to feel by the end of the year?
Your answers can help you create a wellness routine that reflects what you genuinely need now—not what you thought you needed in January.
Choose Consistency Over Intensity
When we decide to begin again, it can be tempting to make dramatic changes. We promise ourselves that we will work out every day, completely change the way we eat, wake up earlier, meditate longer, and somehow transform our entire lives overnight.
But sustainable wellness is rarely built through extremes. It is created through small choices repeated consistently.
Instead of trying to do everything at once, begin with what feels realistic. Two or three classes each week can have a greater long-term impact than an intense routine you can maintain for only a few days.
The goal is not perfection. The goal is to create a rhythm you can return to—even during busy weeks.
At Joya, wellness can look different from one day to the next. Some days, your body may crave an energizing strength, cycle, Pilates, or vinyasa class. On other days, you may need gentle yoga, stretching, meditation, or rest.
True wellness includes learning to listen to your body and respond with intention.
Your Four-Part August Reset
To make your August reset simple and achievable, choose one commitment in each of these four areas:
1. Movement
Choose a form of movement that helps you feel strong, energized, and connected to your body.
Your commitment might be attending three Joya classes each week, trying a new class format, adding strength training to your routine, or simply moving your body for 20 minutes each day.
Choose something that feels supportive—not punishing.
2. Nourishment
Nourishment is about more than following a strict diet. It includes giving your body the water, nutrients, rest, and care it needs to function well.
You might commit to drinking more water, preparing nourishing meals, eating more mindfully, or creating a consistent bedtime routine.
Keep it simple enough that it can become a natural part of your daily life.
3. Rest and Recovery
Rest is not something we earn after pushing ourselves to exhaustion. It is an essential part of physical, mental, and emotional wellness.
Your reset might include taking a restorative class like Yin Yoga or a Massage Ball class, going to bed earlier, spending a few quiet minutes in meditation, scheduling a recovery day, or creating more space between commitments.
Sometimes, the most productive thing we can do is allow ourselves to slow down.
4. Connection
Wellness is easier—and often more joyful—when we do not pursue it alone.
Connection can mean meeting a friend for class, introducing yourself to someone new at the studio, attending a workshop, a retreat, attending a Woman’s Circle (3rd Friday of each month) or simply allowing yourself to be supported by the Joya community.
Community reminds us that we are not alone. It provides encouragement, accountability, and a sense of belonging that strengthens every part of our wellness journey.
Start Where You Are
You do not need to wait for a Monday, a new month, or a new year to begin again. You also do not need to have everything figured out before taking your first step.
Start where you are, with what you have, and choose one small action that supports the person you are becoming.
August is your invitation to pause, realign, and intentionally choose how you want to move through the rest of the year.
What would change if you stopped waiting for January?
What if this month became the moment you returned to your body, your well-being, and yourself?
Let August be your second New Year—and let this be your fresh start.
Your August Reset Challenge
This month, choose:
- One movement commitment
- One nourishing daily habit
- One form of rest or recovery
- One way to connect with the Joya community
Write your commitments down and place them somewhere you will see them. Remember, lasting transformation does not come from doing everything perfectly. It comes from continuing to show up for yourself, one intentional choice at a time.
We look forward to moving, growing, and resetting with you at Joya.
